Incubus’ Brandon Boyd Emerges From the ‘Abyss’

Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd, who recently released his second book, ‘From the Murks of the Sultry Abyss,’ showed off his skills in L.A. as part of his debut art show. Boyd, whose paintings were joined by the photography of Brian Bowen Smith and L.A. promoter Brent Bolthouse, told Spinner visual arts have always been important to him. “I’ve been drawing my whole life,” he said. “I was actively pursuing a career in fine art, then we had our band, which is kind of a similar creative outlet.” As for some of his influences, beyond his mother, who was there along with other family members along with fellow rockers Matt Sorum and Billy Morrison, Boyd says, “I really was fascinated by a lot of the turn of the century nouveau artists growing up like Aubrey Beardsley and Gustav Klimt, Alfonso Mucha. I really liked the hard line poster art, then I got into the psychedelic San Francisco poster art — Stanley Mouse, stuff like that.” Check out Boyd’s paintings here.
