Basement Jaxx/ Switch protégé Graeme Sinden chatted to Skrufff this week about his unique style of genre-defying ground-breaking dance music and revealed that he’s happy to be associated with the new rave tag.
“I’m not a new raver myself, but I’m feeling it,” said Sinden, “I love the energy and attitude of the kids- it’s their вЂ?88 that they were too young for and I’m up for DJing in them clubs too: as producers we’re also f**king with rave sounds, trance synths, hoover basses, breakbeats etc. We’re just doing it in our own style.”
The hyper talented, highly original newcomer said his own roots lie in hip-hop, jungle, UK garage and dancehall and admitted he was initially as against new rave as he was against house.
“I was such a hater at first but that’s mainly towards the Klaxons and all that media shit,” he said. “And I still think house is bit of a dirty word perhaps, most of its shit and generic.
I hated house for years with a passion. I’m still not mad keen on it and that’s why I make, and play, eclectic style. Sure, some of it falls into the house category but I’ve heard people say the music that Switch, Speakerjunk and myself make isn’t even house, that its some crazy hybrid. I like to consider what I make as decent club records,” he added.
First spotted by Basement Jaxx’ Felix Buxton when he was programming the music in a Covent Garden clothes boutique, his next big break came when he made friend with Switch (aka Dave Taylor), who took him under his wing and promptly aught him all his tricks.
“We met back when I was doing PR for Jesse Rose’s record labels. Dave was making wicked Solid Groove records. He got down with hip-hop outside of house music too so we started to do this Brucker Sinden project. I definitely took in a lot from him,” he admitted.
“Without really giving away to much I’d say that you don’t need tons of money to make music,” he added when quizzed on Switch’s key advice, “Just some good monitors, an ear for mix downs, a strong kick, hot ideas, Marlboro lights and plenty of Stellas (beer). His set up is mad simple- it would surprise people.”
The pair recently remixed Basement Jaxx’ (fantastic) upcoming single Hey You, while Sinden’s done Elektrons’ equally good Dirty Basement on his own,
“I did Dirty Basement with the idea that this beat should sustain your interest throughout the entire song and that it should never stay in the same place for too long or repeat too much. I chucked in a reggaeton beat at the end to keep it interesting and roll it out. In each remix I always aim for some kinda’ genre clash.”
Lady Sovereign’s Random (A.Brucker & Sinden Remix) is out shortly on Casual as is Walter Meego’s Through A Keyhole (Solid Groove & Sinden Remix) (Minds Of Fire), Elektrons – Dirty Basement (Sinden Remix) (Wall Of Sound) and Basement Jaxx – Hey You (Switch & Sinden Remix) (XL Records).
