International News: US Campus Killer Seattle Rave Shooter Copycat?

Virginia Tech college killer Cho Seung-hui, who shot 32 fellow students dead before turning a gun on himself, wrote a rambling hate filled explanation in the middle of the spree, and posted it in a package to NBC, the BBC reported this week.

The package contained videos clips, photos of the 23 year old posing with guns and an 1800 word rant in which he blamed fellow students for the massacre.

“Your Mercedes wasn’t enough, you brats. Your golden necklaces weren’t enough, you snobs. Your trust funds wasn’t enough (sic). Your vodka and cognac wasn’t enough. All your debaucheries weren’t enough. Those weren’t enough to fulfill your hedonistic needs. You had everything,” he ranted.

“You forced me into a corner and gave me only one option. The decision was yours,” he added.

His rants matched the bitter jealousy and hatred expressed in a pre-spree note written by Kyle Huff, who last year shot dead six ravers in a similar incident at an after-party in Seattle.

“They’re packed in there, groping each other, having sex, this hippy stuff has to end,” Huff wrote (in a note that was discovered several months afterwards), “I’ve got to do something about it. These people are screwing up the world.” (Seattle Post-Intelligencer)

US author Lionel Shriver, who wrote a novel about school shootings “We Need to Talk About Kevin”, told the Guardian she believes almost all such shootings are copycat crimes with each one increasing the likelihood of more such incidents.

“They are part of the cultural vocabulary, and any disgruntled, despairing or vengeful character of any age of late, since grown-ups now want in on the act,” she said.

“Americans appear to have lost touch with the concept of shame. Now that my compatriots have eschewed the old distinction between fame and infamy for the all-embracing concept of celebrity’, all that counts is being noticed,” she said. (Guardian).
